EA Mobile — Test-phones and PDAs tracking
Check-In / Check-Out system for test phones and PDAs used in mobile game development.
The challenge
A mobile gaming division needs hundreds of real devices (phones, PDAs) to test games across every combination of model / OS / resolution. This test pool is highly mobile: each tester borrows several devices daily and returns them at the end. Without digital tracking, devices get lost, duplicated or stuck with a single team member.
The solution
Rosistem deployed a dedicated Check-In / Check-Out system for the test-device pool. Each phone and PDA is tagged with a barcode label printed on Zebra printers. On pickup from the central locker, the tester scans the device with a Motorola scanner, and the system logs who, what, when. On return, the same scan closes the loop.
Hardware
- Zebra printers — for barcode labels on every device in the pool
- Motorola scanners — for Check-In / Check-Out stations
Outcomes
- Full real-time visibility over the test-device pool
- Clear accountability: each device has a currently-assigned user
- Fewer lost or duplicated devices
About the client
EA Mobile (originally Jamdat Mobile, acquired by Electronic Arts in 2006) was Electronic Arts' mobile gaming division, with popular titles across pre-smartphone and early smartphone platforms. Game development required testing across hundreds of different devices shared between QA teams.
